Andrew Thompson
Director STRUCTURAL
Accounting was always a possibility, until he dropped his best subject at school as he found it too boring.
Though realistically he was always destined to be an engineer. With one grandfather a builder of bridges, and the other a builder of houses, Andrew grew up very much ‘hands on’ with practical projects.
The born and bred Aucklander now has more than 25 years of engineering and project management experience with expertise in structural design, seismic engineering, earthquake assessment and strengthening. He also has experience in design of civil structures such as pump stations, water retaining structures, and of course (given his grandfather’s credentials), bridges.
Andrew heads up Envelope Structural and loves the culture which encourages mutual respect, hard work, creativity and an ‘open door’ policy from senior team members.
He remembers lessons learned from former maths and science teachers, especially one who was previously in the SAS, and taught his students about resilience when times get tough.
Andrew’s ideal day off looks like this. It is a balmy but not too hot. The sand scrunches underfoot as he watches people come and go across the warm ground. His latest read sits nearby, face down on the beach, mimicking the man as it folds happily in the Coromandel sunshine. A paddleboard sits close by. And at the house, a beer (or two) shivers in the fridge.
Accounting is fine, but there’s nothing too boring about this reality.
