Miguel Hernandez

SENIOR HYDRAULIC ENGINEER

Civil engineering and metal music do not often go hand in hand, but they do if your name is Miguel Hernandez.

Miguel was born in Colombia’s capital, Bogota – “a cold city” in the Andes, meaning he has a love for forests and mountains going right back to his life growing up with his parents and older brother. The family was close, with Miguel saying his parents provided equal quantities of rules and protection, and love and encouragement.

When he went to university to study engineering, his fellow “nerd friends” encouraged both his interest in geography and history, and non-traditional music, including so-called ‘prog rock’ and metal.

After completing a master’s degree in hydraulic research in 2011, and working in different areas, Miguel found his work passion in water engineering. He enjoys using the very latest technology at Envelope to make his community safe and happy.

“I like to think I am part of the wheel that makes this country grow and shine.”

Since starting at Envelope in 2024, Miguel has loved the feeling of open communication, and support. It is, he says, like being part of a big family.

And Miguel is busy enough with his own family, with two young children at home. So drawing, playing, and walking are high on his activity list. Otherwise, he enjoys home DIY, listening to podcasts and watching crime series, and biking (sometimes to the Victoria Park Market Envelope offices).

Miguel says he is an early bird, fuelled on coffee and usually gets into the office first so as to get home early to enjoy time with his children. He loves football, and a beer or two at the end of a long day.

He would also like to rejoin a traditional Colombian dancing group he used to belong to, as he feels traditions are important.

His favourite getaway destination would be a little cottage with a fireplace, with a river or lake and forest surrounding it. And maybe a few metal tunes and some great coffee to keep his energy levels up to play with his children.
