Sam Wilkie
Senior Traffic Engineer
Sam Wilkie is a traffic engineer with a practical mind – and a quietly competitive streak.
Sam was raised out west in Titirangi, and has loved the coast, and the surf, ever since. His childhood summers were spent fishing with his grandad and brother at the family bach.
After studying civil engineering at Unitec and working some early roles on home ground, Sam headed off to the UK. And as well as hanging out in the café and pub scene he kept his engineering skills sharp with contract work including putting his skills to work on the British Library.
On his return, he completed a Bachelor of Engineering at University of Canterbury in transport and traffic. His work, since then, has been all about the intricacies, risks and rewards of transport infrastructure.
Sam joined Envelope in 2025, to help build the transport team. His main mahi involves traffic engineering, which involves planning and engineering design into land use, and ensuring changes to transport networks continue to enable safe and efficient traffic flow.
Sam still gets up to a little adventure here and there, hence his great fit for the Envelope crew!
When he’s not cooking up a storm with his wife, he enjoys deeply competitive Monopoly and Lego marathons with his daughter, as well as father-daughter cricket watching sessions.
In his time outside work, Sam loves to “pull things apart and put them back together.”
“Sometimes successfully,” he admits.
Squash, mountainbiking, working on his ‘low’n’slow’ barbeque style, and tinkering with his mountainbike are also on the list, as well as perfecting the art of making sourdough.
Any good-looking Wellington day will find him on his bike, out riding the tracks and trails where possible.
