Annie An
Civil engineer
For Annie An, striving to reach high – whether that involves hiking up hills and mountains or thinking big with career goals – has been ingrained in her from early life.
Born and raised in China until she was 15, Annie then had a big change moving to Auckland to go to college. While challenging, she says it helped her shape perspectives on life and develop resilience.
Guidance from family, friends, and mentors over the years has played a key role in Annie’s life. And she truly believes that embracing change brings growth and new opportunities, or in her own words “Everything happens for a reason”.
Growing up, Annie was interested in science and problem solving, the curlier the equation the better! She also enjoyed looking outside the box for solutions, meaning when she considered what could bring together maths, physics and creativity together in a career, the answer was engineering.
For Annie, the satisfaction of watching her designs turn into a tangible reality has been incredibly satisfying.
She started at Envelope’s Wellington office in late 2024, immediately loving the welcoming office culture, and ‘open door’ policy. Annie has also loved the chance to take on more responsibility and broaden her skill set, particularly through collaboration with Envelope’s external projects team.
Outside of work, Annie likes staying physically fit with hiking, badminton, and the gym on her list. She also loves stargazing at night and discovering new places to grab a bite to eat.
And even though the mercury doesn’t traditionally get up too high in Wellington, Annie loves to feel refreshed through anything icy, with an iced Americano on her favourites list. Or when she wants to indulge, a scoop of butterscotch or salted caramel ice cream is just the thing.
And when the hustle and bustle of life gets a little much, Annie likes to ground herself by going up in order to look down. That is, her favourite place in the world is at the top of a cliff or mountain overlooking the city. It makes the everyday worries seem small, she says, and offers a magical perspective on life.
For Annie, the only way is up. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.
