PAUL JAMES

Senior Civil Designer

A pair of Red Bands have always been a must have for Paul James.

Tauranga-born, Paul has spent much of his life with one foot in the city, and one foot firmly in the country. He lived on a dairy farm when growing up, loving the hard, rewarding work of taking care of animals.

He has spent time on avocado and persimmon orchards, a stint dairy farming (amazing work but tough hours), and now calls a Bay of Plenty lifestyle block home.

Paul studied for a surveying diploma by correspondence and at night classes at Unitec in Auckland while working fulltime in Tauranga, learning on the job, and working his way up the surveying ladder. From surveying, Paul moved into Land Development Civil Engineering and now has over 25 years experience on the job.

Years later, a conversation with Director Alan Blyde led to Paul being second on board at Envelope in early 2016. Paul has worked remotely with regular travel to the capital, until the set up of Envelope’s third office in Mount Maunganui.

He loves the emphasis on work/life balance at Envelope, and that people are at the heart of every decision for both clients and staff, with it feeling very much like a big family.

In his spare time, Paul enjoys time in the outdoors, which he gets both at work and home, with a few beefies on his lifestyle block.

Coffee keeps Paul ticking during the day, and he is a barbeque addict, even professing to love the unique smokey flavour so much you will find him cooking steak on the barbeque during winter, or in the pouring rain.

And though his music taste has diversified from his teens, he still appreciates an amazing guitar riff or lick. Perhaps some Joe Satriani and a cold brew with that steak?
