Jack Thomson

survey technician

Itchy feet or a need to travel runs in the family for Jack Thomson.

His British parents moved to Wellington in the 1980s but after a few years moved to Singapore, then Bahrain, then Dubai where they stayed for a decade. Jack then returned to New Zealand to study for a Diploma in Engineering at Weltec.

After a few years working, those feet got itchy again and Jack spent a year travelling, mostly around South East Asia. He credits his interesting, multicultural upbringing with his desire to travel whenever possible. Jack loves arriving a new place and seeking out a place the locals love to eat, or exploring without a map or phone in hand.

Jack joined Envelope in 2021, and has loved having both a friendly, supportive team and varied, exciting work on large developments. He also loves the fact team members are listened to, and their initiatives acted on – such as the creation of a Green Team to support local environmental drives.

When the forecast is good, Jack takes off for the mountains or the coast to run, tramp, or surf, or all three. He stays in a tent or Department of Conservation hut or drives his self-contained van to a spot where he can have a good coffee and watch a mountain sunrise, or crack a Parrotdog Hazy beer.

Luckily there are plenty of good-looking days forecast, and with a boss who supports good work/life balance, the chances of waking up to bellbird song out in the wild blue yonder are looking very good.
