Jefferson Simmons

Civil Engineer

Renwick, Marlborough. Some of the longest, hottest days a kid could dream of. Jefferson Simmons loved riding his bike to the river with his mates, and building dirt jumps, reluctantly riding home only when it was almost dark.

He still loves mountain biking and the outdoors, but now he is in New Zealand’s capital, he is able to indulge his other long held dream, playing ice hockey.

After school, Jefferson worked in a winery for five years while he worked out what he wanted to study. The civil engineering course at the local polytechnic seemed the right fit for his style of thinking. The last years he has spent time moving between Marlborough and Christchurch staying with family, and studying and working, before being lured to the North Island.

Jefferson started work at Envelope in 2022, with his role involving civil 3D draughting and working on subdivisions. Also in his job description is following Senior Civil Engineer Ryan Rose around and laughing at what can be loosely described as “jokes”.

He loves the fact there is freedom to manage work and workload, while full support and direction is available when needed. A network of supportive people, and thoughtful, logical work practices ensure Envelope stands out as a place to work: “Since day one I felt like part of a team, rather than a new person.”

Outside work, when he’s not throwing himself around the ice rink for the Tuataras (“its cold, its fast paced and physical … its awesome”), Jefferson can often be found tramping in the native bush or biking.

When he takes a break, you can serve up a Panhead Supercharger beer, or a red wine (perhaps as a result of living in a wine vat for those five years?), depending on weather and mood.

The humble potato is a favourite food – whether mashed, baked, roasted, or as chunky wedges, shoestring potatoes, or crinkle cut chips.

Spending so much time in physical activities, Jefferson has broken a few bones along the way – his left arm, his right leg, and also both arms at the same time. Ouch. Though maybe not so much as getting inked with a tattoo to mark each birthday since his 21 st .
